SoNespresso Launch Night

Last week, RUSK & RUSK co-founders James & Louise were asked to be part of a panel at Nespresso to discuss Glasgow's rising profile on the world's culinary stage as well as the importance of using local produce and a trusted network of suppliers. 

Given the national and international press garnered over the past few years for Glasgow and the restaurants within the RUSK & RUSK collection, Nespresso were keen to hear more about RUSK & RUSK’s take on this growing spotlight for the business and city as a whole. The popularity of the city comes as no surprise to RUSK & RUSK co-founder Louise who was quoted as saying in SoNespresso's Fall 2018 issue "Glasgow is known for it's innovative spirit" with James noting on that night that “[as an independent company], we are thrilled to be seen as part of the fabric of Glasgow.”

It is perhaps no surprise then that it was recently announced by real estate advisor Savilles that 2018 was the year of independent leisure operators in Glasgow, bucking the trend for the growth of national food chains. 

Whilst gaining global recognition is so valuable and reflects the hard work being put into the business, keeping a close network of local suppliers and partners is of equal importance for RUSK & RUSK, a Scottish born independent company. The success of all our restaurants relies a lot in the trust we have with our butchers, grocers and winemakers to deliver the very best produce for our customers. Without the basics, everything else falls down. 


In a similar vein, having a network of fellow driven entrepreneurs and creatives in the city encourages and inspires us. At the Nespresso event, GazMac, creative director of art hub SWG3 unveiled his later work painted especially for Nespresso. Gaz and James & Louise first worked together nearly 9 years ago when Gaz designed and produced one of the first pieces of signage for The Butchershop Bar and Grill in the west end - the first restaurant of the RUSK & RUSK Collection to open. 

Overall, the night was a great reminder of the buzzing, creative atmosphere within Glasgow's city centre, of which, as a company, RUSK & RUSK are thrilled to be a key and growing part of.

So L.A. has landed

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for RUSK & RUSK as we’ve been gearing up to open the doors of our newest restaurant, bar and events space So L.A. on Mitchell Street.

So L.A. is the fourth addition to the RUSK & RUSK collection. Situated on 43 Mitchell Street, the new all-day venue is inspired by the vibrancy and diversity of the West Coast’s drinking and dining scene, and will be the first of its kind to land in Scotland. So L.A. boasts an inclusive and highly inventive menu, which will appeal to meat lovers, vegetarians and vegans alike. Diners can expect bold flavour combinations that celebrate the eclectic cultures and cuisines known for influencing the Californian dining scene; with signature dishes including the Sautéed Chickpea Panisse, Street Corn and Miso Glazed Beef Fillet, the menu has already made quite an impression on its early diners.

Behind the venue’s floor to ceiling glass frontage, discerning guests will find a luxurious homage to the atmosphere and energy of downtown L.A. – perfectly channelled through the restaurant’s mysterious urban walkway, sweeping charcoal leather booths and neon-rimmed light backdrops. 

In the bar area to the front of the venue, a striking 25-foot fluted teak, concrete-topped bar takes centre stage. Carefully considered lush foliage and floor-standing antique mirrors contrasted with concrete wall tiles seamlessly combine raw and natural design elements.

Hidden beneath the bar and restaurant, guests will find The White Box – a spectacular, subterranean urban garden designed for private functions. White exposed brick walls, stylish lighting and an ostentatious entrance, make for a stunning and highly flexible city centre space.

Ahead of opening to the public on Friday 9th November, media and friends of RUSK & RUSK were invited to sample some key dishes and drinks including our signature City of Angels sharing cocktail. Guests also took advantage of the limited edition So L.A. baseball caps.

The launch of So L.A. marks an incredibly exciting time for RUSK & RUSK and we are overwhelmed by the reception we’ve received so far. Californian vibes are spreading throughout Scotland so watch this space!

Killer Heels 2018

On Friday November 2nd, we were privileged to once again sponsor Action Medical Research’s fundraiser Killer Heels & Cocktails.

Our RUSK & RUSK co-founder Louise Rusk is Scottish Ambassador of Action Medical Research and has been Chair of this fantastic event for the past two years. Louise works closely with the charity and committee members to create an unforgettable and memorable ladies lunch whilst raising as much money as possible for this extremely important childrens charity.  

The RUSK & RUSK team helped produce several new additions for this year’s event including a bespoke range of Killer Heels notebook, candles and other merchandise. For the 2018 event, there was also the introduction of Rox in a Box, which gave our guests a a chance to win a pair of diamond earrings donated by official jewellery sponsor ROX.

The event was held at The Grand Central Hotel where guests were welcomed in the morning with a glamorous jazz cocktail reception with a great display of ruffle and feathers.

In the grand ballroom, Britain’s Got Talent’s Edward Reid performed an amazing Greatest Showman routine along with the The Pink Acid Dancers while guests took their seats for lunch.

Welcomed back was event host Heart FM’s DJ Paul Harper who set the tone for the afternoon whilst our energetic auctioneer Alex Fleming shook things up as bids flew around the room for the What a Girl Wants auction. 

 All in all, everyone’s generosity in the auction paid back in spades with over £100,000 raised for the charity. Planning an event that would top previous years and give even more back to the charity was always going to be a challenge but we are so thrilled with what has been accomplished this year.

The Soulstars finished proceedings off with a show-stopping performance performing a host of Motown hits. 

Afterwards guests were whisked away to The 158 Club Lounge at Hutchesons City Grill for the official after party, courtesy of Glasgow Taxis . The most dedicated guests then partied the evening away at Glasgow’s most stylish venue with, of course, some amazing cocktails!

Action Medical Research have been funding medical breakthroughs since they began in 1952 and fulfil a critical role in saving thousands of children’s live and change many more. Summer Series 2019 - that's wrap!

Wow! Just when it seemed last year’s summer series couldn’t be topped, RUSK & RUSK have produced the bubbliest, busiest Veuve Cliquot summer series yet.

Throughout the summer, the halls of Hutchesons have seen countless bottles of prosecco drunk, countless selfies at thenow infamous flower wall, hundreds or plates of food and of course hundreds of wonderful guests in its midst.

This year RUSK & RUSK hosted five champagne brunch parties in total including Hutchella, Acceptable in the 80s, Carnaval and two Rose Garden Parties. The theme of each was demonstrated through the menu, decor, entertainment with the hall morphing from festival scene to exotic Carribean party from event to event.

It is, however the staple combination of our co-founder James Rusk’s hosting style (novel shall we say?!) and the majestic plates from our chefs paired with the outstanding Hutchesons surroundings and energy from brunch guests, that makes the atmosphere of our Veuve Clicquot champagne brunches truly special. The feedback from one RUSK & RUSK guest summarised it perfectly.

Behind the success of the champagne parties is, of course, a huge amount of work from all RUSK & RUSK team involved, from invitations, to prop-sourcing to fizz pouring, we are hugely thankful to our unique, hardworking team who are dedicated to making each event one that our guests will remember.

Taxis to Troon 2018

Every year, The Butchershop Bar & Grill love to get involved with the annual Taxi’s to Troon fund. This year was no different, with our staff on hand to hand out rolls for the road for all the awesome drivers, children, parents and carers getting ready to set off to Troon. Whether it was a Bacon Buttie, Roll and Sausage or Roll and Tattie scone they fancied, we had them all ready and waiting to fill their hungry bellies.

The amazing Glasgow Taxis organise this event every year to bring smiles to many children and the entire city. Since 1945, taxi drivers of Glasgow have annually sent free taxis out to Troon to provide an unforgettable day out for the children who need it most! 2018 marked the 73rd instalment of the event. The spectacle of the decorated taxis and dressed-up drivers coupled with the incredible atmosphere provide a wonderful day for all involved.

Women Unite

RUSK & RUSK have had an action-packed couple of weeks teaming up with some Britain’s most inspirational women to discuss the highs and lows of being a leader in their respective industry and offering some words of wisdom to others.

This kicked off with the RBS 100 Women event on Thursday 6th September which took place at the Barras Art and Design Centre (BAaD) in Glasgow’s east end and was attended by a many of Scotland’s inspirational, aspiring women in business.

Co-founder of restaurant, design and lifestyle group RUSK & RUSK, Louise Rusk was honoured to speak at the event, chaired by journalist and blogger Susie Cormack Bruce, to discuss the idea of ‘imposter syndrome’ – the feeling that you don’t belong in the category of ‘businessperson’. The panel discussed their own ways of overcoming this by trusting their instincts, staying true to themselves and pushing back against naysayers.

This topic continued as RUSK & RUSK hosted it’s latest Bubbles & Brunch event on Friday 14th September where guest of honour Marie Macklin shared her very honest account of how she used her authenticity, heart and determination to become a success in business along with her future global expansion plans for her business, HALO Urban Regeneration Company.

Hosted by Louise Rusk and Global Scotland’s Managing Director Tracey McNellan, the event brought together a community of thinkers and leaders, allowing them to share ideas, connect and discuss all things business in a relaxed atmosphere.

We received some fantastic feedback on this Bubbles & Brunch event with Marie herself commenting it is ‘truly a unique way to network with the business community’.

The event marked the last of this year’s Bubbles & Brunch series for this year. Previous guests have included Partick Thistle FC and Indigo PR chairwomen Jacqui Low and ‘first Lady of hairdressing’ Rita Rusk.  

We’re passionate about bringing together people in business to share their stories and create new ideas and partnerships so keep your eyes peeled for similar upcoming events coming in the new year.

Whilst everyone at RUSK & RUSK have always been aware of our co-founder Louise’s cool credentials, it seems the rest of the world have begun to catch on as Louise was announced as one of the top 50 in The Herald Scotland’s Cool List.

Jokes aside, to be on a list rubbing shoulders with the likes of Judy Murray and Christopher Kane is humbling.  Louise is described as being behind some of Glasgow’s coolest eateries, a fantastic mention and moment of reflection for the RUSK & RUSK restaurant collection.

 

RUSK & RUSK Cater For ROX x HUBLOT World Cup Event

In celebration of the beginning of the World Cup, RUSK & RUSK were thrilled to be invited to cater for an awesome event held in collaboration with ROX and Hublot. On Thursday 31st of May, the iconic Argyle Arcade mall was transformed into an awesome football pitch, encouraging an exciting evening of friendly competition and an abundance of food and drink.

With more than 150 guests in attendance, including Rugby Players Finn Russell and Rory Hughes, attendees were split into teams to begin their very own World Cup tournament. Hosted by Sky Sports broadcaster Geoff Shreeves, several games of table football were played in the chance to win a prize of two tickets to attend any group stage match of the Champions League next year alongside flights and accommodation.

As well as the hunger to win the outstanding prize, in between games, guests eagerly indulged in our football inspired snacks! From mini venison hotdogs to duck and haggis pie, they certainly hit the spot to keep the energy of the game going.

The evening was a huge success, with visitors leaving high on excitement and full of delicious food. Bride to be Steph Telfer decided to make a special occasion extra special last month by proposing to her bridesmaids in the setting of our beautiful Hutchesons City Grill. Our team were delighted to be apart of the special day, ensuring that every detail was beautifully designed to pop the questions to the special ladies in her life.

We are proud to be part of the Glasgow Gift Card scheme

Glasgow Taxis Ltd. drivers have always had the gift of the gab, now, they have the gift of the card.  

In this first stage of giveaways, a team of Glasgow Taxi volunteers will be hitting the streets of Glasgow on Wednesday 11 July, to prize 3,000 Glasgow Gift Cards to some lucky locals.

Accepted in more than 80 local businesses, the Glasgow-wide gift card is a prepaid Mastercard that can be spent at the city’s leading restaurants, shops, attractions and now, in more than 800 Glasgow Taxis. 

Chairman Stephen Flynn stopped by Hutchesons City Grill in a brand new electric cab to accept payment for a taxi trip from RUSK & RUSK Co-Founder, Louise Rusk.

We are now accepting the card across The RUSK & RUSK Collection, including The Butchershop Bar & Grill, Hutcheson's City Grill, The 158 Club Lounge and The Spanish Butcher.

Created and supported by Scottish Enterprise, the Glasgow gifting initiative provides the perfect present, with consumers being able to discover and enjoy the best of Glasgow with one handy card at their fingertips. 

Louise Rusk said:

"The Glasgow gift card is a gateway to incredible independent experiences, and we're excited to part of a scheme which provides customers with endless choice.

The new product supports the city's Tourism and Visitor Plan to 2023, which provides the blueprint for continuing to grow Glasgow's global profile as a must-visit destination and is focused on increasing overnight leisure tourism visits by one million over the next seven years.

Winners at The Scottish Food Awards!

On the 20th of May 2018, RUSK & RUSK attended The Scottish Food Awards at the grand King’s Hall in Edinburgh. The awards ceremony celebrated many individuals from within the hospitality sector, from business owners to chefs of the year.

Arriving to a beautiful champagne reception, RUSK & RUSK were excited to attend such a prestigious event. The night proceeded with a stunning 3 course meal to please guests and nominees as anticipation built before the announcement of the awards. RUSK & RUSK were nominated for two awards and were thrilled to walk away with both.

Honoured to receive one of the top awards of the evening, James and Louise Rusk received the prestigious award of ‘Restauranteurs of the Year 2018’. In addition to this, our group development chef John Molloy was delighted to receive the ‘Development Chef of the Year 2018’, another huge achievement.

Celebrations continued into the night for RUSK & RUSK HQ, ecstatic to be part of such a successful night!

BII Awards 2018

On Sunday the 13th of May, team Rusk & Rusk attended the prestigious British Institute of Inkeeping Awards. A celebration of licensees who go the extra mile to achieve excellence within their businesses, it was a great honour for the team to be nominated for two awards.

Held at the Crowne Plaza in Glasgow and hosted by the wonderful Jennifer Reoch, the evening was a smashing success for Rusk & Rusk. With The Butchershop Bar & Grill winning Food Operator of the Year and Rusk & Rusk picking up the coveted Licensee of the Year award, it's safe to say the company was thrilled to be recognised for its hard work over the years.
